Documentary Brand Story Sessions

Your work tells a story. Let’s make it visible.

Go beyond the curated headshots and highlight reels. My Documentary Brand Story sessions are for small businesses that capture the rhythm of your workday. How you connect, create, and care. It’s a documentary approach that reveals the people, process, and purpose behind your business in a way that feels honest and human. These images build trust, connection, and a sense of presence—online and off.

Just your work, your story, and your presence, documented with intention.

Authentic stories, gently unfolding.

The OHANA Experience

Your work has a heartbeat — the quiet beginnings, the behind-the-scenes processes, the imperfect moments where real connection and purpose live. That’s the story I’m here to document.

“OHANA” is at the center of my approach, even in brand storytelling. It’s the lens I use to honor the people, values, and everyday rhythms that make your business uniquely yours.

Here’s what OHANA means in this space:

  • Open to all the ways you show up in your work. Your brand has personality, quirks, and real human energy.

  • Honest interactions and heartfelt purpose.

  • Authentic storytelling that reflects what you actually do - no staged scenes or forced poses.

  • Noticing the beauty in your everyday workflow. The small decisions and details that define your craft. These moments deserve to be seen.

  • As You Are. Your brand story is already meaningful — just show up as you are, and I’ll take care of the rest.

FAQs

  • My process is calm, collaborative, and intentionally low-pressure. Documentary brand sessions work best when there is trust and clarity, not rushing or performing.

We’ll begin with an optional discovery call where we talk through your business, your goals, and what a documentary brand session actually looks like. This is a space to ask questions, voice concerns, and make sure this approach feels like a good fit for how you work.

After booking, you’ll complete a questionnaire that helps me understand your business, your people, your values, and what a typical day or season looks like for you. This helps me arrive informed and ready to document what truly matters, without forcing a narrative or shot list.

On the day of the session, I work quietly and attentively, observing how your business naturally operates. I don’t direct or stage moments, but I do offer gentle guidance if something feels unclear or if you’d like support navigating the flow of the day. My role is to witness your work honestly and thoughtfully, creating images that feel lived-in, grounded, and true to who you are.

  • This is incredibly common, especially for business owners and teams who aren’t used to being photographed.

My documentary approach is designed specifically for people who don’t want to perform or pose. Rather than asking you to “act natural,” I focus on real work, real interaction, and real moments as they unfold. Most clients tell me they forget about the camera surprisingly quickly.

If anyone starts to feel unsure, I’ll offer light direction or prompts rooted in what you’re already doing. Nothing is forced or performative. The goal is not to create a polished version of your business, but an honest one that feels comfortable and familiar when you look back.

  • Yes, with intention.

I prioritize sessions local to Northern Virginia and the DMV area, as I balance photography alongside family life and other work. That said, I’m open to discussing travel for projects that feel aligned.

Sessions outside a 30-mile radius of 20164 incur a $100 travel fee. Sessions beyond 60 miles may require additional fees depending on distance and time commitment. All travel details are discussed clearly during the inquiry process. There are no surprises.

  • Wear what you normally wear to do your work.

I recommend clothing that feels comfortable, professional in a way that aligns with your brand, and true to your day-to-day environment. Neutral or muted tones tend to photograph well, but authenticity matters more than coordination.

For preparation, very little is required. Documentary sessions are not about staging or styling your business. There is no need to make things look perfect. A lightly tidied space and a typical workday rhythm are more than enough.

If you’d like input on wardrobe, environment, or timing, I’m always happy to talk it through.

  • Yes. These are wonderful opportunities for documentary storytelling.

If your business hosts events, teaches workshops, or offers classes, documentary coverage is a powerful way to capture not just what you do, but how it feels to be there. The energy, connection, learning, and experience are often what set your work apart. Those moments cannot be recreated in a styled session.

Event and workshop coverage is designed to document real interaction, teaching, engagement, and atmosphere as it naturally unfolds. These images are ideal for ongoing marketing, future promotions, and showing potential clients what it is truly like to work with or learn from you.

If this is something you do multiple times a year, or if you want a steady refresh of content for your marketing, the Workshop and Class Coverage or a bundled option may be a great fit. We can talk through what makes the most sense based on your rhythm and needs.

  • Yes, thoughtfully and in context.

While I don’t offer headshots as a standalone service, a small number of natural, relaxed headshots can absolutely be included during your documentary brand session if that is something you need. We can intentionally build time into your session for this, whether that includes individual portraits, team headshots, or updated images of you in your workspace.

Rather than stiff or overly polished portraits, these headshots feel like you. They are grounded, present, and aligned with the rest of your brand imagery. They work beautifully alongside the documentary images, creating a cohesive visual library you can use across your website and marketing.
