New Camera, New Lens, New Me!

After my first photoshoot with my new Canon R7 camera using the kit lens, I quickly realized how limiting kit lenses can be. I got plenty of great images, but I was left wanting more. I had planned to purchase at least one additional lens to go with my new camera and landed on the Canon RF24-70mm F2.8 L IS USM. We’re going on vacation soon, and it was my hope to get the new lens before that trip. It arrived, and oh man… I am in love! As Jared Polin always preaches, “Glass, glass, glass, glass, glass.” While you can always get great images regardless of what camera body or lens you have… I did NOT know what I was missing.

Being able to set a much wider aperture than I’ve been able to on my Nikon D50 with the kit lens was a dream! I was able to use a much higher ISO to be able to use a faster shutter speed than I’ve been able to use in low light situations and maintain a sharp image. This is the first image I took with my new lens. And instantly, I get a nicely composed image where the subject (my husband, Tom) is in focus, nice and sharp, and even got some nice bokeh going on - something I’ve NEVER been able to achieve on my Nikon D50. Overall, the level of detail I was able to capture was so much greater than my 15-year-old camera that needs to go into retirement.

It’s finally summer break! So naturally in my first days when I’m in full-on lazy mode and don’t feel like going anywhere, but still had a hankering to get out and take some photos… I decided to head into my backyard. The goal here was really just to get more practice with the new camera and lens. I am hoping to break it in a little bit and get familiar with all the features before heading on our summer vacation next week. I got a couple of really neat shots of the coleus and ferns. I noticed how awesome the autofocus is, something I really struggled with on my Nikon D50.

And what wouldn’t be a practice photo shoot without some snapshots of my favorite model, my dog, Tori!

All in all, I am really happy with my purchase decisions and I am really excited to continue getting out there and taking photos that are sharp, captivating and vibrant! Can’t wait to share my next adventures with you!
